Presenters:

Tina Gutierez-Schmich is the Equity Director for Bethel School district, UOTeach Faculty in the College of Education at the UO, and co-director of UOTeachOUT. Tina also sits on the board for a variety of state and regional equity projects. Tina as over 30 years of experience in education including early childhood education, k-12, higher education. Her areas of specialty include issues of equity, access, and inclusion in education, conflict and dispute resolution, and restorative practices. Tina has a bachelor’s degree in Family Human Services, a master’s degree in Public Policy and Management, a master’s degree in Conflict and Dispute Resolution, and PhD in Critical and Socio-cultural Studies in Education. Her research is on public pedagogy and the productive spaces within conflict and discord in communities.

 

Julia Heffernan is the director of the Master’s Program and Licensure for the department of education studies at the UO, instructional faculty for UOTeach, Co-Chair of the Oregon Safe Schools and Communities Coalition, and co-director of UOTeachOUT. Julie was a k-12 teacher and administrator for 13 years and has been teaching in higher education for 10 years. Her areas of specialty include equity and inclusion research, gender and sexuality minority issues in education (LGBTQ), school culture and bullying, and teacher education. Julie has a bachelor’s degree in English, a Masters’ degree in Educational Administration, an administrative license, and PhD in Critical and Socio-Cultural Studies in Education. Her research focus is on gender and sexual orientation issues in K-12 schools and curriculum theories address minority studies and systems of oppression.

Presenter: Michael Weiner, LCSW

Michael Weiner is a licensed clinical social worker in both Oregon and New York. He is a psychotherapist in private practice working with children, adolescents and their parents, as well as adults with trauma histories. In addition, he is a consultant in early childhood education at the Riverside Church Weekday School and an adjunct professor at the Adelphi University School of Social Work where he teaches practice classes focusing on mental health treatment with children and adolescents and their families, family therapy, and couple therapy. He has presented his work related to understanding and managing rough and tumble play in the classroom (preschool-age children), fatherhood and parenting, and medical illness-related parenting at numerous professional conferences. In addition, he has presented and published his work with adult survivors of sexual abuse and presented on issues of loss and medical illnesses. Michael Weiner is the co-author of two books: “You and Your Child’s Psychotherapy: The Essential Guide for Parents and Caregivers” published by Oxford University Press and “The Complete Father: Essential Concepts and Archetypes” published by McFarland & Company Inc. He is currently co-authoring a third book written for early childhood educators, tentatively titled “Communication and Classroom Behavior in Early Childhood Education” also to be published by McFarland.

Presenter: Kara Eubanks

Dr. Kara Eubanks is the director of the Willamette Violin Academy in Eugene where she teaches violin and music theory to students ages 4–18. She holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in violin performance from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. Her research focuses on the Suzuki Method’s relationship to Western Progressive education and Western traditional string pedagogy.

Presenter: Rachael Perry, Early Literacy Librarian

This interactive brown bag session will explore the use of play, song, and movement at home and in the classroom to create a fun, language-rich learning environment. Perry will also share information about the Eugene Public Library’s youth programs and  community initiatives.  Rachael Perry is the Early Literacy Librarian at the Eugene Public Library, where she  coordinates library programs, collections, and outreach for children 0-6, their parents, and caregivers. Her background in theatre and community-based art and her experience working in Latino communities informs her work of creating inclusive, engaging early literacy opportunities for all families.
